Frequently Asked Questions

What is the different between shotcrete and gunite?
Shotcrete and gunite are both sprayed concrete applications with similar end results. Gunite uses the dry mix process where water is added at the spray nozzle, while shotcrete typically refers to the wet mix process where concrete is pre-mixed with water before spraying. Both methods provide excellent strength, durability, and can be used for the same applications including pools, walls, and structural work.
Is shotcrete good for swimming pools?
Yes, shotcrete is an excellent choice for swimming pool construction. It allows for completely custom shapes and designs, provides superior strength and durability, requires no formwork, and creates a monolithic watertight structure. Most high-quality inground pools are built using shotcrete or gunite because of these advantages.
How strong is shotcrete compared to poured concrete?
Shotcrete can achieve compressive strengths of 28-40 MPa (4,000-6,000 PSI) or higher, comparable to or exceeding conventional poured concrete. The pneumatic application compacts the concrete as it’s applied, reducing voids and increasing density. When properly applied by trained professionals, shotcrete provides excellent structural performance.

What thickness of shotcrete do I need?
Shotcrete thickness varies by application. Swimming pools typically require 6-9 inches (150-230mm) of shotcrete. Retaining walls range from 4-12 inches depending on height and load. Structural repairs may require 2-4 inches minimum. Our team will assess your specific project and recommend the appropriate thickness for optimal performance.

Can shotcrete be applied in cold weather?
Yes, shotcrete can be applied in cold weather with proper precautions. Our volumetric trucks can add hot water and accelerants to the mix. Heated enclosures may be used for curing, and we monitor temperatures throughout the process. However, optimal conditions are above 5°C (40°F).
