Pervious Concrete Calgary

Pervious Concrete Calgary

Strong, long-lasting permeable concrete that filters rainwater, prevents runoff, and replenishes groundwater. Meet city regulations on impervious surface coverage while getting a durable, eco-friendly pavement solution

Special Equipment for Higher Strength

Unlike regular concrete, pervious concrete must be laid with special equipment to ensure proper void structure for rainwater absorption. Our team of experts are trained to use the proper equipment to lay your porous concrete and get the job done right the first time

Proper installation is critical for pervious concrete performance. Incorrect techniques can seal the surface, preventing water infiltration. Our experienced crews ensure optimal compaction without closing the void structure

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pervious concrete?
Pervious concrete (also called permeable or porous concrete) is a special concrete mix with an open-cell structure containing 15-25% voids that allows water to pass through. Unlike traditional concrete, it filters rainwater, prevents runoff, eliminates standing water, and helps replenish groundwater levels. It’s made with carefully sized aggregate and minimal fine materials to create interconnected void spaces.

Is pervious concrete as strong as regular concrete?
Pervious concrete typically has lower compressive strength (10-20 MPa or 1,500-3,000 PSI) compared to regular concrete (25-40 MPa) due to its void structure. However, this strength is more than sufficient for driveways, patios, parking lots, walkways, and other typical applications. The use of special equipment and proper installation techniques ensures optimal strength while maintaining permeability.

What are the benefits of pervious concrete?
Benefits include: on-site stormwater management without drainage infrastructure, groundwater recharge, elimination of standing water and ice formation, reduced runoff and flooding, compliance with city regulations on impervious surface coverage, cooler surface temperatures reducing heat island effect, pollutant filtration from runoff, and support for nearby tree root health by allowing water and air penetration.

Does pervious concrete require special maintenance?
Pervious concrete requires periodic maintenance to prevent clogging of the void structure. This includes regular vacuuming or pressure washing to remove sediment, leaves, and debris. Avoid using sand or salt in winter (use liquid de-icers instead). Keep landscaping materials away from the surface. With proper maintenance, pervious concrete can maintain its permeability for 20+ years.

Can pervious concrete be used in Calgary's climate?
Yes, pervious concrete performs well in Calgary’s freeze-thaw climate when properly designed and installed. The void structure actually helps with freeze-thaw resistance because water drains through rather than sitting on the surface. A properly designed aggregate base provides additional drainage. We use air-entrained mixes and proper curing techniques to enhance durability in our climate.
